About Hostway Battle over 'sandwich' domain name CAPE COD, Mass. - June 09, 2005 - A Massachusetts innkeeper and a British-based business owned by descendants of the Earl of Sandwich, are battling over an Internet domain name. Brian Clifford, innkeeper at The Earl of Sandwich Motel has been accused of cybersquatting by the sandwich company owned by descendants of the original Earl of Sandwich, the Cape Cod Times reported Wednesday. Clifford says he purchased the the Internet domain name in the mid-1990s and his Web site has become an integral part of his $250,000-per-year business. However, Gary Davis, chief executive officer of Earl of Sandwich, says the company that sells pre-packaged sandwiches to shops and restaurants in England has plans to franchise in the United States. The sandwich company would prefer if Clifford would adopt a new Web address -- earlofsandwichmotel.com. Clifford has consulted a lawyer who said he had a strong case to keep the domain name, but said a legal battle could be lengthy and cost $2,500 to $50,000 with no guarantees. Welsh web war on radio Matt Withers, Wales on Sunday Cult Radio Wales DJ Chris Needs was furious to find someone had snapped up his internet domain name and set up a site claiming to be him. The chrisneeds.co.uk site boasted "Welcome to Chris Needs' website" along with quotes from his late-night show and pictures of the presenter. But when BBC bosses investigated, they found rival DJ Mike Parker from South Wales station Red Dragon FM had bought the name. He was ordered to shut it down because he had used the BBC logo on it. A spokesman said: "BBC Wales can confirm that our business affairs department contacted the internet service provider and requested that the website should be taken down due to a breach of BBC copyright and the misuse of the BBC logo." Mr Needs, who next week picks up an MBE from the Queen, and Mr Parker refused to comment. A Red Dragon spokeswoman said: "He just saw the domain name for sale and bought it. "He didn't put anything on there which was offensive. He wasn't trying to dupe anyone, although you could probably argue why he did it in the first place."
