FRC Voices Opposition to '.xxx' Domain Name
'Pornographers will go to the '.xxx' domain, but they won't leave the '.com' domain,' says FRC's senior legal counsel Patrick Trueman
WASHINGTON, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently announced a plan to create a ".xxx" domain address to house pornographic websites. Patrick Trueman, FRC's senior legal counsel and former chief of the U.S. Department of Justice's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, released the following statement expressing strong opposition to ICANN's plan:
"The new domain would do more harm than good. The '.com' domain has been a cash cow for the porn industry and pornographers will not give it up and remove themselves to the '.xxx' domain. Instead, they will populate the '.xxx' domain and perhaps double the number of porn sites available on the Web.
"The '.xxx' domain also cloaks the porn industry with legitimacy. The industry will have a place at the table in developing and maintaining their new property.
"Creating a virtual red light district may also discourage law enforcement from bringing obscenity cases on the notion that the problem is solved."
Patrick Trueman is the author of a newly released FRC pamphlet -- "Dealing with Pornography: A Practical Guide For Protecting Your Family and Your Community." The pamphlet explains actions that the average citizen can take to fight porn in stores, on the internet, and on television. FRC Applauds Anti-Pornography Taskforce
'We are thrilled to have some backing in our fight to protect our children.' - Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council
WASHINGTON, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Justice just announced the creation of the Obscenity Prosecution Task Force, "exclusively dedicated to the investigation and prosecution of obscenity cases." This follows a directive last week by the Attorney General to all United States Attorneys to report to him by July on effective ways to crack down on obscenity in their districts.
"It is now clear that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is fully committed to going after distributors of obscenity and fulfilling his promise to make obscenity crimes a major priority at the Department of Justice," said Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council.
"It is about time," continues Perkins. We are thrilled to have some backing in our fight to protect our children. Attorney General Gonzales is to be commended for his brave leadership in helping clean up our culture and protect our children."
"We will watch closely, though with a growing sense of confidence in our new Attorney General, to see who is appointed to direct the effort. We are encouraged that Attorney General Gonzales intends to follow through with his promise to enforce indecency and obscenity violations. He understands, as he has previously stated, that 'enforcement is absolutely necessary if we are going to protect citizens from unwanted exposure to obscene materials.'"
The Family Research Council has been critical of the Department of Justice for its half-hearted obscenity prosecution effort and we are eager for Attorney General Gonzales to make effective changes to the obscenity prosecution team.

FRC Denounces ACLU Assault on School Prayer
'This assault on religious freedom is yet another example of the ACLU's crusade to eradicate any public recognition of America's spiritual heritage.' Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council
WASHINGTON, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is recommending that officials at a public school in New Orleans be "fined or jailed" for failing to stop prayer before a high school baseball game last month. ACLU of Louisiana executive director Joe Cook says that prayer at a school related function is "un-American and immoral."
Last month, the Louisiana ACLU asked Judge Ginger Berrigan to hold the same school board in contempt for allowing an elementary school student to recite the Lord's Prayer before its meeting. This ruling was denounced by Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco but is being appealed.
Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council released the following statement:
"This assault on religious freedom is yet another example of the ACLU's crusade to eradicate any public recognition of America's spiritual heritage. I applaud the students, parents, and school board for standing firm in the face of the ACLU's intimidation and threats.
"While our high school campuses have become virtual battle grounds, the ACLU has fixed its sights not on the perpetrators of violence but on those who would allow prayer. When the latest school shooting took place yesterday in Texas the students and dazed administrators didn't turn to the ACLU or the courts to be consoled but to local ministers who were summoned to the school to pray and counsel with the students.
"If the ACLU and the courts would stop attacking students who are praying, we might very well have fewer violent criminals preying upon their classmates."
